Organizers of the Gran Fondo New York bike race don’t want an amateur Lance Armstrong among the 6,000 cyclists competing in the 105-mile event next weekend. So they are spending $15,000 on drug tests sanctioned by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, the same organization whose investigation led Armstrong to confess that he cheated to win seven Tour de France championships by using performance-enhancing drugs.
With cycling participation in the U.S. up 66 percent — there were 70,829 USA Cycling licenses issued in 2011, an increase from 42,724 in 2002 — organizers of top U.S. amateur events are spending more on drug testing to maintain legitimacy.

I ciclisti dovranno competere dalla partenza all’arrivo.

Misery loves company. One cyclist grinding his way up an endless hill is a recipe for cramping quads and existential despair. But 8,000 bikers? That’s a party. The Italians, who invented these mass pedal fests, dubbed them Gran Fondos, or “big rides.” Though it may have started on the old continent, this Italian specialty’s biggest manifestation is in New York, where Campagnolo Gran Fondo New York takes off from Manhattan’s George Washington Bridge at the end of this month.

New York ist mehr als eine Stadt. Es ist DIE Stadt. Ein Sehnsuchtsort, Schauplatz tausender Blockbuster, The Big Apple.

New York-Roma, andata e ritorno, in bicicletta.

A few years ago I was near Lake Como in Italy preparing to ride several of the epic climbs of the Giro di Lombardia. I was especially looking forward to grinding my way up the legendary climb to the chapel of the Madonna del Ghisallo – a small church full of bikes that a pope blessed as a shrine to cyclists. I envisioned my arrival at the top of the Ghisallo in religious terms. I was ready to be touched by the spirits of Coppi and Bartali, to light a candle in honor of riders past, and to be cosmically realized as a cyclist.

Den främre växelföraren krånglar. Typiskt.

06:30 A.M. Nueva York. La bici- cleta toma la ciudad. Es algo extraño y novedo- so.

Local cyclists said Sunday’s race was the equivalent of the New York Marathon for the biking world, except the race was open to anyone, regardless of experience or qualifications. The winner, however, would qualify for the Union Cycliste Internationale Amateur World Championship.
